First of all, Happy New Year! This is the first Horseshoe Curve Weekly post of 2017. --

A photo was snapped, during the Penn Central transition period in 1968, of a trio of locomotives at the head of a large freight train approaching the Horseshoe Curve on track 4. Unbelievably, the locomotives in the shot actually hold historical significance: at the forefront is Penn Central GP-40 #2498, second is Pennsylvania RR GP-30 #2230, and the third is New York Central GP-9 #5947. The importance of these begins with the two trailing locomotives which are in the livery of the New York Central RR & the Pennsylvania RR, which were the two railroads that merged to form the Penn Central (which is the lead locomotive.)
